Mizuma Gallery is proud to present “Earth, Sky, and Sea: Contemporary Voices from Bali”, bringing together the works of Ari Bayuaji, Kemalezedine, and I Nyoman Arisana, three contemporary artists from Bali, Indonesia, whose practices demonstrate distinct approaches to engaging with history, material, and cultural knowledge.
Ari Bayuaji’s Weaving the Ocean transforms discarded plastic ropes and other marine waste collected from Bali’s coastlines and mangrove forests into handwoven sculptural works that reveal the environmental and social histories embedded in reclaimed materials. Created in collaboration with local artisans, the project raises awareness of plastic pollution while preserving traditional Balinese weaving practices and highlighting community resilience. Kemalezedine reinterprets canonical images and themes from Western art history through the visual language of the traditional Batuan painting style, creating a dialogue between European art historical narratives and Balinese artistic traditions. By placing these visual systems in conversation, his work challenges conventional distinctions between centre and periphery, historical and contemporary, local and global. I Nyoman Arisana’s paintings draw on traditional Balinese art techniques to examine the tensions between cultural traditions, rapid modernization, and environmental change in contemporary Bali. Combining intricate, imaginative compositions with social critique, his works reflect on themes of community, harmony, and the evolving relationship between people, nature, and the built environment.
Presented at FOCUS Art Fair London, the exhibition showcases contemporary art from Indonesia through works that address environmental, historical, and cultural change using material transformation, art historical references, and traditional practices.
