Mizuma Gallery is proud to present Tracing Shadow, a solo exhibition by Indonesian artist Budi Agung Kuswara. Drawing on over fifteen years of working with archives, cyanotype, and the materiality of light, Budi Agung Kuswara combines solar processes and manual brushstrokes to explore evolving relationship between trace, reconstruction, and perception.
Budi’s second solo exhibition at Mizuma Gallery features works from the last six years, beginning with his cyanotype and painting on paper and kamasan canvas, moving toward works composed using algorithmically generated images (Tiba Anak Cucu series), and finally his most recent series, Tracing Shadow. Budi’s works envision an alternative reality set against rich cyanotype blue, where they join the shared struggle and tension across Southeast Asia as we contend with our colonial past and global present.
Described as “Solar Synthetic Reality”, this approach reveals reality as a layered synthesis whose apparent stability conceals underlying fractures and mediated structures. Reality is not fixed or pure, but is continuously shaped through the interaction of history, technology, the body, language, and systems of knowledge and power.
Tracing Shadow, a solo exhibition by Budi Agung Kuswara, will run from 15 August to 20 September 2026 at Mizuma Gallery, 22 Lock Road #01-34 Gillman Barracks, Singapore 108939. The gallery will open from 11am to 7pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays, and 11am to 6pm on Sundays. The gallery will be closed on Mondays and Public Holidays.
An Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, 15 August 2026 from 3pm to 7pm, with an Exhibition Walkthrough with the Artist from 3pm to 4pm. An Exhibition Tour in Mandarin will be held on Saturday, 29 August 2026 from 4pm to 5pm, and an Exhibition Tour in English will be held on Saturday, 12 September 2026 from 4pm to 5pm. About the Artist
Budi Agung Kuswara (b. 1982, Bali, Indonesia) graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI), Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2009. Trained in kamasan painting, Budi retains the intricacy and delicate linework of this traditional art form in his contemporary works. His artistic practice is rooted in a decolonial spirit, exploring how bodies, memories, and archives can reveal alternative histories and possibilities of healing. Working primarily with painting, cyanotype, and socially engaged art, Budi connects sunlight, time, and community as living elements within his process. In recent years, his inquiry has evolved into an approach he calls Solar Synthetic Reality (SSR), examining how contemporary images shaped by digital systems can be brought back into dialogue with sunlight as an index. His works are part of the collection of Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; National University (NUS) Museum, Singapore; Ur-Mu Museum, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Museum Azman, Shah Alam, Malaysia; and Tumurun Private Museum, Solo, Indonesia. Budi Agung Kuswara lives and works in Bali, Indonesia, where he founded Ketemu Project and co-founded Rumah Berdaya Denpasar.
